A successful A+A (AplusA) – International Trade Fair and Congress in Düsseldorf for Real Safety

Showcasing trusted anti-slip and ladder safety solutions at one of the world’s leading workplace safety events.

The A+A International Trade Fair and Congress in Düsseldorf once again proved why it is one of the world’s leading events for occupational health and safety. This year, Real Safety was proud to be part of it for the second time, meeting professionals from across industries who share a common goal: creating safer workplaces.

Throughout the exhibition, visitors explored Real Safety’s live demos of our proven anti-slip solutions and ladder upgrade systems, designed to reduce the risk of slips, trips, and falls in challenging environments. From industrial sites to offshore platforms, these solutions continue to help companies strengthen compliance and safety standards.

We were also delighted to welcome our partner Heechang Shim from South Korea, whose visit made the event even more incredible. The exhibition offered valuable opportunities to exchange ideas, discuss challenges, and build connections with partners, clients, and safety experts from around the world. Every conversation reminded us why safety matters most: protecting those who keep operations running every day.

A big thank you to everyone who visited our stand and shared their insights during the fair.

DIN 18799-1: Germany’s updated fixed ladder standards

Did you know Germany implemented new fixed ladder regulations in 2019?

Every year, workers face severe injuries or worse because ladders safety isn’t always ensured. Moreover, despite advances in workplace safety, accidents continue to happen, which clearly highlights the need for stronger measures.

In response to these ongoing risks, Germany updated its ladder regulations, introducing the amended standard current version DIN 18799-1:2019-06. Published in June 2019, this update specifically focuses on fixed ladders with two uprights, aiming to improve safety in everyday use.

Understanding DIN 18799 Standard

DIN 18799 is a series of Germany´s standards that defines safety requirements and testing criteria for fixed ladder systems in construction. The standard is divided into three parts, each covering specific ladder systems and components:

  • Part 1: Applies to a fixed ladder with two uprights
  • Part 2: Applies to a fixed ladder with one upright
  • Part 3: Applies to accessories and associated safety equipment

For this news article, the focus is Part 1, which covers fixed ladders with two uprights.

Key changes to the current version of DIN 18799-1:2019-06

Compared to the 2009 edition, the 2019 amendment introduced significant updates, reflecting modern safety practices and technical requirements. Notably, key changes include:

  • Round rungs are no longer permitted on vertical ladders, as they do not provide a secure footing.
  • Vertical ladders on buildings must be equipped with safety railing (back protection or fall protection) for total fall heights over 3.0 m (previously over 5.0 m).
  • The score of the application extended by additional requirements for vertical ladder systems on chimneys and antenna support structures.

Because these three points have the most direct effect on ladder safety, design, and regulatory compliance, companies across Germany now face the challenge of not only meeting the standards but also ensuring ladders used in daily operations provide maximum safety. In practice, this means that ladders must be  reviewed — and, where necessary, upgraded—to meet the updated amendments.

For a detailed overview of the changes, you can refer to the MUNK Group’s detailed explanation here: DIN-18799-1:2019-06.

Upgrade Ladder Safety with Our Solutions

Since the amendment in 2019, round rungs on stationary ladders have been classified as a safety risk. To address these challenges, Real Safety offers practical and effective solutions to upgrade existing ladders without full replacement.

With our innovative approach, our anti-slip U-profile ladder rung covers, convert existing round rungs on vertical ladders into a square and slip-resistant (R13) rung shape in accordance with DIN 18799-01. As a result, you can instantly upgrade ladder safety without replacing the entire ladder. Improve safety instantly – click here to watch our installation guide and see how it works.

How the HSE report reflects industry risks and safety measures

The latest report from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), for 2023/24 has revealed some concerning figures regarding work-related fatalities in Great Britain. According to the report:

  • 138 workers tragically lost their lives in work-related incidents in 2023/24, marking a slight increase of 1.5% compared to the previous year.
  • 87 members of the public sustained fatal injuries related to work-activities — resulting in a 19% increase compared to the previous year.

While overall figures are consistent with trends seen before the COVID-19 pandemic, the data underscores persistent and serious risks within specific sectors and activities.

Where are fatalities happening?

According to HSE data, fatal injuries largely concentrated in five sectors, accounting for 80% of the total. Despite improvements in some sectors, the construction industry continues to record the highest number of fatalities year after year.

Leading causes of fatal injuries

The main causes of fatal workplace accidents have remained largely unchanged for over two decades. In 2023/24, five types of accidents accounted for 86% of all workers deaths, with the most common being:

What does this mean for businesses?

The rising figures — particularly in high-risk industries like construction — highlight the urgent need for businesses to reassess and reinforce their health and safety initiatives:

✔ Prioritise risk-heavy activities such as working at height
✔ Enhance training and awareness programs for all workers
✔ Implement regular risk assessments and implement robust control measures

By implementing practical safety measures, workplaces and public spaces can move beyond just raising awareness— they can actively reduce accident risks and create a safer environment for everyone.

At Real Safety, we believe that every step toward a better workplace safety is a step towards protecting lives. With years of expertise, we proudly and successfully delivered innovative anti-slip safety solutions across industries such as construction, oil and gas, offshore-wind energy, maritime, nuclear generating facilities, and more. Whether it’s construction, energy, or maritime — safety shouldn’t be optional. Contact us to discuss how we can support your safety initiatives.
