Nuclear generating facility proactive safety measures with our anti-slip solutions

Early 2024, the Learning and Performance Division at Bruce Power, one of the largest nuclear generating facilities operating in Ontario Canada, contacted Real Safety for a safety upgrade. Their management team wanted a proactive solution to reduce slip hazards, especially in areas where aging infrastructure and harsh weather conditions posed potential risks to their workers.

The Challenge: Addressing slip hazards

Several high-risk areas require immediate safety improvements:

• Metal Stairways: Originally installed in the 1980s, these stairs had become worn and smooth over time. The facility needed a high-traction solution without undergoing full structural replacement.
• Weather Hazards: Routine safety inspections identify higher risks during wet weather and Canadian winters, even though no incidents have occurred.
• Maintenance Training Shops & Outdoor Access Stairways: Heavy foot traffic and snow accumulation raised safety concerns, especially near cutting and threading machines.

The Solution: Anti-slip step-covers and GRP walkway covers

To address these challenges, Real Safety’s anti-slip stair covers and grp walkway cover were installed in key areas:

• Maintenance Training Shops: Non-slip step-covers were applied to metal stairways leading to mezzanines and access ladders. Shop floors were outfitted with walkway covers in areas with cutting and threading machines, to eliminate slip hazards caused by oils and lubricants.
• Outdoor Access Stairways: Step covers eliminate slip hazards caused by snow accumulation on stairs leading to worker trailers.

The installation process was quick and simple, ensuring secure placement without requiring major structural changes.

The Impact: Workers and other employees were impressed with the robustness and quality of our anti-slip safety solutions. The Division Manager shared: “After the installation, another facility on-site requested to have Real Safety’s anti-slip safety step covers for their outdoor access stairway to trailers.
