Fiberglass Stair Treads

Stairs are a high-risk area when it comes to slipping or falling, and we always recommend that stairs and treads are secured and equipped with the right solution to prevent accidents happening.

Our GRP fiberglass stair tread gratings are lightweight – and strong, and an ideal alternative to conventional steel grating, concrete etc. They offer superior load bearing and are ideal in industrial and commercial settings, where there may be hazards such as liquids, oils, or debris on the surface, which can cause slips and falls.

Stair treads are made of lightweight fiberglass and are extremely durable. We have encapsulated sharp silicon carbide stones into the surface of the glass fiber to provide optimum friction – making them an ideal staircase tread solution for many industries.

Our non-metallic stair tread offers excellent value for money, particularly in high-traffic environments where safety and durability are paramount.

What are the benefits?

Fiberglass stair treads have many advantages compared to similar materials, including:

  • Cost effective – GRP stair tread grating only weigh about 1/3 of steel grates – but are equally strong, making them a very cost-effective long-term investment
  • Corrosion resistant – Our fiberglass stair tread grating lasts much longer than i.e. a steel tread (no corrosion), making them suitable for use in environments where corrosion is a concern
  • Enhanced safety – Installing our non-slip grp grating ensures that workers can safely walk on it even in wet and slippery conditions
  • Enhanced visibility – We can equip the staircase tread with a yellow “nose” on the edge of the step, to make it more visible and safe
  • Durability – Our GRP stair treads are highly durable and can withstand heavy loads, extreme weather conditions, and exposure to chemicals and UV radiation
  • An ergonomic solution – Fiberglass gratings are comfortable and flexible to stand on and an ideal solution for stair treads

Where do you use Fiberglass Stair treads?

GRP/FRP stair treads gratings can be used in a variety of settings, industries and applications where safety, durability and corrosion are critical and where exposure to moisture, chemicals or harsh weather conditions can cause traditional metal or concrete stair treads to deteriorate quickly.

Stair tread application
  • Construction
  • Chemical and petrochemical industry
  • Food and beverage industry
  • Water and wastewater treatment plants
  • Marine and off-shore energy industry
  • Oil and gas facilities
  • Commercial and industrial settings
Reducing accidents – statistics

Falls on walkway surfaces and stairs are a significant cause of accidents in Europe and worldwide. In fact, according to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work ( EU-OSHA), falls are one of the leading causes of injuries in the workplace in Europe. The agency states that walking and working surfaces, including stairs and walkways are common locations for falls.

In 2020, Eurostat reported that almost 2.7 million non-fatal work accidents resulted in workers being absent from work for four days or more in the EU.

Workplace safety is becoming increasingly more and more important. This is why the EU made a 6 year strategic framework in 2021, focusing on improving occupational health and safety in companies in the EU.

When companies fail in their duty to prevent accidents, consequences include:

  • Legal penalties
  • Regulatory Fines and Penalties
  • Damage to company reputation

KEY BENEFITS

Our GRP/FRP staircase treads offer several benefits that make them an attractive alternative to traditional materials, including:

  • Excellent slip resistance even in wet or oily conditions
  • Strength-wise they can be compared 1:1 with steel grates
  • Real Safety step treads are lightweight (⅓ of steel) making them easy to handle and install
  • Highly resistant to chemicals, moisture and UV radiation making it ideal for use in harsh environments
  • Fiberglass staircase treads are available in three different types: Grit, Concave and Closed
  • These non-metallic materials require minimal maintenance, do not require painting, coating or sealing making them a cost-effective solution
  • Molded grating stair treads provide outstanding durability and corrosion resistance due to their chemical and physical properties
  • Fiberglass gratings are comfortable and flexible to stand on and an ergonomic solution for stair treads
  • We can equip the staircase tread with a yellow “nose” on the edge of the step, to make it more visible and safe

Frequently Asked Questions

If you can’t find the answer you are looking for here, please contact us.

How do I install Stair Tread grating?

Please view our installation guide for Stair Treads here.

Cutting your stair tread before installation is simple and similar to working with wood, with some slight differences.

The lightweight fiberglass stair tread is also resistant to weather and chemicals, and therefore does not need painting or additional coatings.

If the treads are used in a highly corrosive environment, we recommend to edge seal the sides of the stair treads (if cut to size) with resin to firstly, cover the exposed glass fiber strands and secondly, to prevent possible areas of infiltration and corrosive attack of the stair tread covers.

How do I maintain and clean GRP stair treads?

Regular cleaning will keep your grating product free of debris and looking new. Our grating solutions are easily cleaned by high-pressure water or steam – or just a normal broom.

Do not use steel brushes or chemical cleaners on the surface.

How long do GRP stair treads last?

All our grating solutions come with a minimum ten year guarantee.

How much does a stair tread solution cost?

It depends on the size of the staircase project and delivery costs. Contact us for more info. We would be more than happy to quote a price for you.

Is it a sustainable product?

Our GRP stair tread grating can be considered a sustainable option for several reasons:

  • Long lifespan: GRP grating has a long lifespan and require minimal maintenance, which reduces the need for frequent replacement and repairs
  • Low energy consumption: The production of GRP grating requires less energy compared to other materials such as steel and concrete – resulting in a lower carbon footprint.
  • Lightweight: GRP materials are lightweight, making them easier to transport and install. That reduces fuel consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Chemical resistance: GRP materials are resistant to corrosion and chemical degradation, reducing the need for chemical treatments or coatings, which can have negative environmental impacts.
Why are stair treads important?

Stair treads made from FRP/GRP gratings are an ideal alternative to steel grates.

They provide a safe, strong, lightweight and cost-effective solution over the lifespan of the staircase.

What fiberglass material is stair treads made from?

Fiberglass Molded Gratings are produced by wet moulding and hot curing in a heated mould. The reinforcement consists of continuous fibreglassrovings in alternating layers, so the loads are distributed evenly in all directions.

Real Safety’s fiberglass gratings have a polyester resin matrix and glass content is approximately 35%. The glass fibers provide strength and stiffness to the composite material making it durable and long lasting.

Our anti slip frp stair tread grating is available in three types of surface: Grit Top, Concave Top, and Closed Grit Top.

We offer GRP gratings in standard grey (RAL 7004) or any other colour combination – often with a yellow nose.

The thermosetting resins used in our stair treads are chosen for their ability to bond effectively with the glass fibers and provide excellent resistance to environmental factors such as UV exposure, chemical and moisture.

Our staircase treads are available in four standard resin grades.

How to choose the right Fiberglass Stair treads?

When choosing the right stair treads, consider the following factors:

  • Intended application and size
  • Identifying the environment and requirement to i.e. chemical substances
  • Cost and installation
  • Load bearing strength of the area in question
  • Choosing the right surface grit
  • Maintenance requirements
  • Safety and anti-slip requirements
  • Ergonomics of the product
  • UV and corrosion resistance requirements

By considering these steps, you can select fiberglass, non-corrosive stair treads that are appropriate for your specific application – providing a durable and cost-effective solution.

We offer our clients a personal consultancy approach to gain an in-depth understanding of the industry they serve and the challenges they are facing, so we can provide them with the best solutions.
