Rig Safety Setback Area Mats for drilling

Setback areas are locations where drilling equipment is temporarily stored when not in use. These areas can be dangerous if they are not properly secured and maintained.

RIG SAFETY Mats for Setback areas have been designed for use during drilling operations and are widely recognised as the premier solution for protecting equipment and preventing slips and falls.

These mats are 100% solid polyurethane elastomer and made of a higher density polymer than our standard safety mats. As a result, the custom formulation of these mats offers extreme hydrolytic stability, anti-fungal properties and ultraviolet stability. The slip resistant platform mats resist the effects of invert and other corrosive drilling fluids.

These mats are a smart choice as they provide reliable protection, are easy to install and maintain and meet industry safety standards.

What are the benefits?

  • Improved safety – Safety mats provide an anti slip surface reducing the risk of slips and falls, which can cause injuries to personnel working in the setback areas.
  • Protecting equipment – It protects equipment from damage caused by impact or exposure to the elements on drilling sites and improves the overall efficiency of the drilling operations.
  • Cost savings – reduces costs associated with injury claims, equipment repair and replacement, and downtime due to accidents.
  • Compliance with safety regulations – rig operators can ensure that they are in compliance with regulations and avoid potential fines or penalties.
  • Increased efficiency – By providing a safe and stable surface for equipment, our mats can help  to increase the efficiency of drilling operations. This helps to complete projects on time and on budget.

We have worked with the oil and gas industry since 2007, and we know this business!

Where do you use rig safety mats

RIG SAFETY Mats for Setback areas have been designed for use in setback areas during drilling operations.

Setback areas are locations where drilling equipment is temporarily stored when not in use. These areas can be dangerous if they are not properly secured and maintained.

Rig Safety Setback Area Mats application

Setback areas are typically uneven and slippery due to the presence of mud, water or other debris. Our safety mats can be used to cover the area and provide a safer surface for workers and equipment.

  • Setback areas
  • Pipe racks
  • Tubular racking

Our mats are designed to ensure maximum drain-off.

We have developed slip resistant rig mats to withstand not only the compression, but also the weight of drill pipes.

Reducing accidents – statistics

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration ( OSHA), slips, trips and falls are a leading cause of workplace injuries in the oil and gas industry. OSHA also reported that between 2014-2018, there were 489 fatal workplace injuries in the oil and gas extraction industry, with 39% of these fatalities resulting from slipping, tripping and falling.

In addition, the National Institute for  Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reports that the oil and gas extraction industry has a fatality rate that is more than seven times higher than the rate for all industries in the United States alone.

These statistics highlight the importance of safety measures, including rig safety setback area mats in preventing accidents on drilling sites.

Drilling operators may face serious consequences if safety measures are not followed on drilling sites. Some of the possible consequences include:

  • Injuries and fatalities – Failure to implement safety measures can lead to serious accidents.
  • Environmental damage – Accidents can result in catastrophic environmental damage to the surrounding environment.
  • Regulatory fines and penalties – Failure to comply with safety regulations can result in fines and penalties.
  • Lawsuits – Workers who are injured on the job may sue the drilling operation for damages which can be costly and time-consuming.
  • Damage to reputation – A poor safety record can damage the operation’s reputation and make it more difficult to attract and retain skilled workers.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you can´t find the answer you are looking for here, please contact us.

How do I install Setback Area Mats?

Please view our installation guide for Rig Safety Mats here. Install the rig mats easily on site by following our easy to follow guide.

The weight of the Setback Area Mat itself is normally enough to secure a safe placement. Otherwise, the mat can be secured using conventional fixings.

Please note that this product is heavy! Use lifting aids and suitable manpower to avoid hazards.

How do I maintain and clean Area Setback Mats?

The heavy duty safety mats should be cleaned regularly using water based detergents, a stiff brush or high-pressure washers – using any of the following methods:

  • Steam, if available
  • High pressure water
  • Non-flammable solvent which will remove oil and grease
How long do the Setback Mats last?

A minimum of ten years.

How much does our Rig Safety mats cost?

It depends on the size of the setback area mats needed. Contact us and we would be more than happy to quote a price for you.

Is it a sustainable product?

Depending on disposal methods, polyurethane can be recycled. In fact, recycled polyurethane is present in products with very different uses and in multiple sectors. Its residues, once ground and reprocessed, make it possible to manufacture high-density panels that replace wood and chipboard.

To improve the sustainability of the rig mats, end-users must also consider repurposing the mats at the end of their lifespan to reduce the environmental impact. It is important to note that the sustainability of these mats goes beyond just the material choices. Factors such as energy required to produce and transport the mats and the environmental impact of their use should also be considered when evaluating their overall sustainability.

Why are Setback Area Mats important?

It is important to protect both personnel and equipment on oil installations. It is very costly in terms of time, money and reputation should an accident occur.

What materials are used to make Area Setback Mats?

The choice of material of rig safety mats for setback areas will depend on the specific requirements of the job, including factors such as weight-bearing capacity, weather resistance, and impact resistance.

Our Rig Safety setback area mats are 100% solid polyurethane elastomer and made of a higher density polymer than our standard safety mats.

As a result, this custom formulation offers extreme hydrolytic stability, anti-fungal properties and ultraviolet stability. The slip resistant platform mats resist the effects of invert and other corrosive drilling fluids.

Other specifications include:

  • Based on the fire test, our pads quality is class B according to DIN 1402
  • Classed as non-hazardous materials
  • Mat thickness is 1 ½” (40mm)

View our RIG-SAFETY-Setback-Mats-Datasheet for more technical details.

How do I choose the correct setback mat?

There are several factors to consider when selecting the right Rig Safety Setback Area Mats, including:

  • Determining the weight capacity and portability
  • Determining the size and shape
  • Identifying the environmental factors
  • Installation method
  • What anti-slip properties is required
  • Certification and compliance
  • Maintenance and cleaning requirements
  • Costs

By following these steps, you can choose a rig safety setback area mat that is best suited for your specific needs and provides enhanced safety for workers and equipment on the drilling floor.

Since 2005, we have worked with global companies running production oil & gas platforms, drilling rigs, refineries, tank farms etc. to develop safety solutions – and our mats are widely recognised as the premier solution for preventing slips and falls but also for increasing rig floor safety generally on the market.
