How to Secure Walk Ways
Why should I secure walkways?
Walkways are areas that are used on a daily basis. These places cannot be avoided, so might as well be safe.
There are many different types of walkways depending on where they are located and what they serve as. They can be in gardens of private individuals, but they can also be in public places, in factories, offshore on rigs or on ship decks. These different purposes call for different materials such as concrete, grating, wood etc. All of these materials have something in common though: they are very dangerous to walk on when they are wet.
You should secure these walkways in order to prevent costly slip and fall accidents from happening.
A slippery concrete floor can be secured effectively by mounting a 3 mm thick fiberglass walkway cover on it which is embedded with hardwearing silica carbide stone fragments. We recommend that the walkway profiles be mounted with countersunk screws. An adhesive mounting paste works very well as a sound membrane if necessary.
The profiles are available in all colors and can be cut to order.
Alternatively, a concrete deck is made slip resistant simply by using a rubber mat with an asphalt-like surface. This anti-slip solution is optimal for temporary issues or if an ergonomical effect is desired.
A steel plate with a pattern seldom offers an effective anti-slip function. Especially when wet, these plates get quite slippery. This is why checker plates are effectively secured by mounting walkway covers on them. We recommend an adhesive paste (Tec7) for mounting on checker plate – this will also absorb noise.
To create a pedestrian area some choose to place the anti-slip profiles in a pattern that imitates pedestrian crossings. When doing this we recommend that the profiles have a maximum distance of 20 cm from each other. This way there is always friction under every footstep.
Metal gratings or perforated steel plates
There are many types of anti-slip steel gratings and anti-slip steel plates on the market. What they have in common is that after a short time of use they wear round and become less slip resistant. Furthermore, these surfaces become slippery when wet anyway.
We recommend our FRP grating, with permanent anti-slip embedded stones or alternatively our flat profiles to lay on top of the grating or the plate in question. As for the stairs and step covers, the flat profiles are mounted with our special clip, which are tightened up against the grate from underneath with a countersunk bolt from the top.
Prevent falls with walkway covers
As mentioned before, walkways can become very slippery when wet and that can cause accidents. Fortunately, Real Safety has a wide variety of anti-slip solutions for all types of surfaces which are quick and easy to mount when the above instructions are followed.
Also, there are many different colors and grip grades with or without text/pictograms to choose from. What's more, we also gladly cut sheets to your desired size.
