Real Safety’s green transition journey

Real Safety recently spoke to a film crew sent by the Danish Business Authority about our approach to the green transition and sustainability. That resulted in a great article – and video case.

Extract from Virksohmedprogrammet.dk – SME: Green Competence case:

“The goal is to be number one in the world for sustainability in our industry”

Until recently, Real Safety in Esbjerg had not had a structured approach to the green transition and sustainability, as it had not really been a priority for customers. The expectation is, however, that an increasing focus on sustainability will give companies with a clear green profile competitive advantages, and this has made it interesting for Real Safety to set concrete sustainability initiatives in motion.

Torben Farup founded Real Safety in 2007. He had been able to ascertain that a large part (approx. 33% – of all workplace accidents), happen because people slip, fall or trip on a surface. He has made it his mission to try to reduce this number. To do that, he has developed non-slip profiles produced in a mixture of resin and glass fiber composite – and he succeeded in getting the products into production.

Increasing demand for sustainable measures

Real Safety supplies anti-slip solutions to companies and organizations both in Denmark and abroad. And it certainly hasn’t escaped Torben Farup’s attention, just how much sustainability has started to come up in the general debate – along with increased reporting requirements in connection with ESG. We have been lucky enough to secure co-financing from the EU, which has made it possible to start the upskilling of staff in sustainability.

Navigating the risks: Securing your harbour environment!

Safety is paramount in the bustling world of harbour environments, where slips, trips and falls pose significant risks.

One of the most prevalent risks faced by workers in these environments is the presence of slippery surfaces.

Dock and pier surfaces, loading areas, and gangways demand vigilant attention, especially during adverse weather conditions.

Esbjerg Marina - anti-slip

Dock and pier surfaces: These main walkways quickly become hazardous when met with moisture, compounded by heavy foot traffic. Slippery surfaces endanger workers and visitors alike, leading to potential accidents and operational disruptions.

Loading and unloading areas: Cargo handling zones are high-activity areas where moisture and oil can create dangerous conditions. Accidents here can cause serious injuries to workers and damage to cargo, impacting overall safety.

Gangways and ramps: Vital transit points within harbours, these areas are prone to slip hazards due to their incline and exposure to the elements. Safety guarding them is crucial for pedestrian and driver safety.

Prioritizing safety measures and securing your harbour environment is essential for maintaining operational efficiency. Real Safety has a long track record with providing anti-slip safety solutions to marine vessels and harbour environments. Learn more about Escape Route Markers

Poor and unclear escape guidance can be fatal in emergency situations! Signs and Escape Route Markers must be top priority for successful escape to safe Muster points.

Our solution represents a paradigm shift in addressing challenges associated with traditional maintenance of Escape Route Markers. Total Energies use our markers as a best practice solution. It has demonstrated exceptional value in both enhancing safety standards but also cutting costs by innovative thinking of technology.

This solution seamlessly aligns with the personal safety objectives and safety technologies of the Tank Storage Awards. It is a durable and reliable solution – tailored to the unique demands of tank terminals.

Top 5 Key Benefits of Real Safety Escape Route Markers:

  • Visual Guidance: The Escape Route Markers offer clear visual guidance, addressing compromised visibility in both offshore and tank terminal environments during emergencies.
  • Durability: Crafted from high-grade Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP), our markers exhibit unparalleled durability. It is essential for withstanding the corrosive effects of saltwater in harsh operations and the chemical exposure prevalent in tank terminal settings.
  • Ease of Installation: Engineered for seamless on-site installation, the markers eliminate the need for prolonged downtime in any setting, contributing to operational efficiency. The use of hot-work and electrical tools is not needed.
  • Maintenance-free: This technology requires minimal post-installation maintenance, presenting a sustainable and cost-effective solution for sustaining clear escape routes over time. In challenging environments, we guarantee 10 years of maintenance freedom.
  • Cost savings: Maintenance free is one parameter, but compared to the conventional approach of painting, this technology can be installed immediately 24/7, 365 days a year.

Critical industrial facility safety focus: Tank Storage Terminals

Tank Storage stats - number of terminals

Did you know that there are 6,640 tank terminals worldwide, boasting a staggering total storage capacity of approximately 1.5 million CBM?

These numbers are more than just statistics; they represent the backbone of various industries, from oil and petrochemicals to agriculture to manufacturing.

These facilities play a vital role in storing and distributing essential liquids and chemicals.  But amid the bustling activities of tank storage terminals, one often overlooked aspect requires our attention: Ladder safety.

Tank Storage stats - fatal work injuries due to ladders

The latest report from the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics for 2020, serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenge posed by the lack of ladder safety. Non-fatal ladder injuries resulting in at least one day away from work remains alarmingly consistent. Shockingly, there were 22,710 injuries attributed to ladders as the primary source of harm in 2020, and figures are noticeably similar to the 22,330 incidents reported in 2019. These statistics highlight the urgent need for improved safety measures in these facilities.

Ladder accidents occur in industrial facilities like tank storage terminals due to reasons such as slips and trips, lack of maintenance etc. To prevent these types of accidents happening, it´s crucial to implement strict safety protocols and ensure that workers are aware of the potential hazards associated with ladder use. This is where our innovative safety solutions can make a significant difference.

Real Safety’s FRP/GRP ladder solutions are ideal for Tank Storage environments due to several factors:

  • Anti-slip surface;
  • Corrosion resistant;
  • Do not heat up like steel – even in warm climates;
  • Easy to and install without closing off areas and the use of hot works;
  • Not electrically conductive (spark safe);
  • No maintenance;

Take a look at our case study for BPGIC at Fujairah Oil Industry Zone II. Based on that case, we won Gold at the Global Tank Storage Awards held in Rotterdam earlier this year, in the Safety Technology category.

We are committed to safety, and our solutions make a significant difference in improving safety standards within tank storage terminals, ultimately safeguarding the well-being of workers and critical facilities.
